Freed Chapter 1
A South Window Snack
(South Window)

Freed stood in Lord Granmeyer's office. They had been going over important South Window Buisness. It had gone well. However Freed thought quietly to himself. The North Window situation was yet to be resolved. Lord Granmeyer had sent a local youth to investigate. Freed didn't understand Lord Granmeyer's logic but; Lord Granmeyer was his lord and master.

"Lord Granmeyer, maybe I should go see if that boy needs help?" Freed asked politely.

"Nah, I think he can handle it. I looked into that boys eyes, Freed... he can handle it." Granmeyer coughed he was an older man, getting on in years. Freed worried about him, terribly.

"Lord Granmeyer, are you okay?"

"I'm fine, Freed," Lord Granmeyer said before he let out another little cough. But before Freed could ask Lord Granmeyer if he was okay, Granmeyer blurted out, "How's your wife Freed?"

"Yoshino," Freed thought to himself. He missed her SO much, he couldn't wait till the next time he could return to their home. Freed quickly regained his composure not wanting to look disrespectful. "She is very well, Lord Granmeyer, sir."

Lord Granmeyer shook his head. Freed wondered if he was getting on the man's nerves.

Granmeyer smiled at him. "Ah, Freed..." he began. "You are very loyal. You need to know how to relax. You know, like Viktor or something."

"Viktor?" Freed thought to himself. "Viktor?" Freed couldn't believe he could ever be like Viktor. Certain conduct was required in certain situations. Freed respected Viktor as a leader of troops but he knew that that sort of lax discipline was not for him.

"Lord Granmeyer, it is nearing lunch time, may I get you a snack?"

Granmeyer smiled. "Freed, you are my military aide, not my errand boy."

"Lord Granmeyer I would be honored and would feel privileged to get you your lunch!"

Granmeyer sighed. He sat down. "Sure, Freed I guess that would be nice."

Freed bowed and exited the office. He soon made his way outside of the building. Some priest named Gantetsu was standing near yelling out something or other. Freed had his mind on other things. Where would he get Lord Granmeyer lunch? Freed decided to go to the inn. They had some good quality Japanese food. Plus they had doggie bags.

Freed walked through the beautiful city. It still amazed Freed. Before he knew it he was in the inn. The inn was kept clean. There was a servant girl sweeping. Freed looked at the other patrons. There was a big drunk man staring at the ceiling. In the corner, a man sat. He has a mustache and shifty eyes. He had a glass of wine in front of him. Freed suddenly became uncomfortable, this man felt creepy.

Freed walked over to the counter. "Hello, innkeeper sir."

"Hi, Freed," the man replied monotonously. He too was sick of Freed's manners.

Freed ordered something Lord Granmeyer would enjoy. He, although hungry, got nothing. He was on a mission for Lord Granmeyer. Later, he could get food for himself.

Freed sat there politely waiting for his food. Then the creepy man walked up to him. "Hello, you must be Freed, the military head of South Window."

Freed was caught off guard. "Yes sir, I am," he replied slightly nervous.

"I am Leon Silverberg. Perhaps we will meet again." The man handed the innkeeper a few potch and left. Freed hoped he'd never run into that man again.

Just when Freed was starting to relax a bit, the drunk decided to make trouble. That was Freed's luck.

"Hey wench!" the drunk yelled. He grabbed the girl who was sweeping. He slapped her. "I want more wine!"

Freed walked over. "Excuse me," Freed began. "Let the girl go."

The drunk looked into Freed's eyes. Freed kept his gaze steady. The drunk let the girl go. Freed nodded. He turned around. Looking back, this was his big mistake because the drunk then knocked him out with his empty wine bottle. Obviously the bottle shattered but Freed wasn't thinking clearly. He was going unconscious.

Freed opened his eyes. He was tied up in a closet, the ultimate indignity. His head hurt real bad.

Freed looked around for his sword, the drunk had removed it from his sheath. Freed took the dagger from his boot that he kept for emergencies and began to cut the rope. Now, he always believed and this was almost his motto, "Be prepared."

Freed broke free of his ropes and opened the closet door to peer outside.

The drunk was finishing tying up the innkeeper and the girl. This was outrageous! No one committed such acts in South Window! The drunk then picked up a doggie bag. "That must be Lord Granmeyer's food," Freed thought.

The drunk opened the bag. He took some out and eat it! The drunk had stolen some of Lord Granmeyer's food! Freed couldn't contain himself anymore. He charged out of the closet and leapt on top of the drunk. They fell to the ground. Freed slammed the drunk's head down against the floor. The drunk looked crazily into Freed's eyes. Freed slammed the man's head again. The man looked angrier. Freed slammed the man's head again. This time the man look dazed and was soon unconscious. Freed smiled. He then joined him.

The innkeeper had put Freed in a bed for free on the house. He had stopped this drunk robber from stealing all of his hard earned potch. The city guards had taken the man away. Freed looked peaceful lying there. A doctor had said he would be fit by morning. It didn't matter, Freed had earned as much rest as he desired in the innkeeper's eyes.
