Camus Chapter 3
"What Kind of Fool...?"
(Two-River)

        "Halt! Who goes there??"

"Jordie, Ranzel, please move out of the way. This fellow here has an appointment with Ridley."

The two kobold guards looked at each other in dismay as if Feris had spewed out the entire Matildian knights' Code in one breath. Ranzel, the taller and darker furred kobold stepped in front of Feris and Camus and poised his spear in his right hand while his offhand was placed on his hip.

"Don't lie to me, Feris, if Ridley was expecting such an important person to visit Two-River, he would of informed us. As of late, he has not given us any information that anyone was to come visit him! Now be on your way!"

Feris started to panic. He looked at the somewhat bemused Red Knight who was, at this point ready to turn tail and walk back (his horse had been stolen) to Rockaxe. I..can't let him know about this...thought the pointy eared, mottle-furred kobold soldier.

"Ah..Sir Camus, there seems to be some sort of misunderstanding here. If you allow me to uh, talk with these two guards, I shall get back to you shortly."

Camus nodded without saying a word. Even if he was able to visit Ridley, he would have no energy to have this...important meeting. Stubborn kobolds, pokemons and Highlanders that can easily out-fox him, it was all too much in one day. He placed his gloved hand over face and rubbed his eyes. Then he turned his head towards Greenhill and saw in the distance one of his red knights galloping towards him.

        What is going on?

"Commander Camus! I've found you at last! Bad news!" The Red knight stopped his steed and jumped off to face his leader. "Someone has been impersonating one of our loyal knights!"

Camus smirked and placed his gloved hand on his forehead. "Raine, I don't want to hear it! I have enough problems as it is!"

        "I am Leonard, Sir Camus!"

"Ah yes.." The leader of the Red Knights waved a hand towards his subordinate knight, "You guys all look alike to me."

"Commander Camus! This is important! It's quite possible that we could have SPIES in our army! We must do something quickly!"

"Leonard, calm down and tell me what exactly happened."

"Well, our group was at Highway Village investigating a bandit attack-"

"Excuse me?" Camus interrupted. "It is not your duty to patrol that town. We have Blue and White knights doing that job for us."

"We've been instructed by Nadai to bring a group of knights over there."

"Who the hell is Nadai? Nobody ever tells me anything anymore."

"Nadai is a new lieutenant appointed by you, Commander Camus!"

Camus looked at the low-ranking Red knight as if he was from outer space. That was the last straw. I appointed no one by that name. NO ONE. Something was definitely wrong.

"A new FEMALE lieutenant, Sir Camus! And I thought all Matildian Knights were men. You sure have good taste for young ladies." beamed the relatively inexperienced Red Knight.

"Leonard, come here.." said Camus as he gestured the young boy to come closer towards him. Leonard took several steps forward until he was face to face with his commander. Camus took one of his white gloves off his hand, filled it with gravel that was lying along the path outside Two-River and slapped the knight with it.

"Ow, Sir Camus, that hurt." Leonard whined as he held the left side of his cheek with his hand.

"Leonard, you moron, if I had appointed a new co-commander I would've let all my knights know about it. But I don't even know this person existed! Where is she now?"

"She went to Greenhill sir! If we hurry, we can still meet up with her and we can all be one happy family!"

Camus gritted his teeth and glared at the young baffoon. The Commander of the Red Knights was known for having a good temperament, but today was his off day. He took off the other glove from his left hand and slapped Leonard again on the same cheek.

"Leonard, go to your room. I have no time to waste. I will be checking up on Feris to see if he's convinced the bone-headed kobold guards that I must see Ridley immediately."

Camus headed towards the gates of Two-River hoping that Feris had some good news. Instead he saw both Ranzel and Jordie driving off the tall canine-like humanoid away from the city gates with their long spears. Jordie aimed his recently sharpened spear at Feris' rump and gave the mottle furred kobold a good stab. Feris yelped in pain as he tried to flee from the crazy spear wielding kobold guards.

"Hey, this is actually fun!" Jordie said with a toothy grin. "Ranzel, join in! Seriously, my friend. He's got two cheeks, we each take one."

Ranzel chuckled politely and replied, "Oh very well my friend."

Before Ranzel could aim his spear at the poor kobold's rear, a blinding silver light shot forth and knocked the weapon out from his hands. Ranzel looked at his now empty hands, dumbfounded, then he looked up to see who or what had knocked his spear out from his grasp. There, standing a sword's length away from him, stood the Red Knight Commander, his rapier drawn and aimed at the kobold's guard throat.

        "Down boy!"

By that time, Feris was already on his knees, worshipping the Red Knight for saving his sorry hinney (no pun intended). Camus looked at the pathetic looking mottle furred kobold and raised an eyebrow. He had such good faith in kobold warriors until now. Camus sighed and placed his sword back in his scabbard.

"So what's the deal, Feris? Do we have permission to enter Two River?"

Feris, who was still on his knees looked up and beamed a toothy smile towards the Red Knight, "Ahh..well, you see Camus....it's more complicated than I thought..."

Camus took a deep breath and gritted his teeth again. He wasn't sure who to strangle more, Leonard, the baffoon or Feris, the incompetent kobold warrior. Finally, after hanging around the gates of Two-River for several hours, he decided that he wanted to meet this so-called new 'co-commander' that he 'appointed.'

"Feris, I shall be going to Greenhill. If Ridley decides to get his long furred butt over here, tell him that he shouldn't be keeping the Commander of the Red Knights waiting for several hours."

Feris finally stood up and placed both his hands on his chest, "I'm coming with you, Sir Camus!"

Camus raised an eyebrow, "Excuse me? Feris, I have enough problems when Leonard's around, I don't need another idiot to take care of."

Feris' once pointy ears began to droop in disappointment and the once toothy grin he always sported disappeared.

"I understand Sir Camus...I shall return to Two River now.."

Meanwhile, Ranzel and Jordie were talking amoungst themselves and quickly stopped when they spotted Feris making his way towards the gates of Two-river. They both looked at each other and nodded knowingly. Jordie, the blonde furred kobold who looked like a cross between a german shepherd and a gold retriever stepped up and pointed his weapon at Feris.

"Feris, we're not letting you back into Two-River for reasons you maybe aware of. If Sir Camus doesn't want you along, then that's too bad. He better have a high tolerance for incompetant fools like you, because you will go with him whether he likes it or not!"

"W-what??" Feris exclaimed, "N-No no no! I respect the guy enough that I don't want to get in his way!"

"Fret not, Feris, I'm going with you."

        "Say again?"

"I'm going with you. Just in case you decide to sneak off and return to Two River. You know how it is, don't you?"

Feris sighed, "Very well. But I guarantee you Camus will not like this.."

-----------------------

Fools! I'm surrounded by them! Camus and his motley crew of merry men made their way on foot towards Greenhill, Commander in the lead, air-headed Red Knight trailing behind with two dog-headed humanoids following the knights like lost little puppies. Weary and tired, Camus decided that a good long nap at the local inn would give him more energy to put up with these bumbling companions.

"Sir Camus! Have you forgotten why we're visiting Greenhill?" Leonard said in a concerned tone.

Oh yes. Nadie, Nadu, or whatever the hell her name was. I'd like to meet her. The maybe I'll know what's going on amongst my army of knights. I always visit my knights on a daily basis, but yet they always manage to do something that I don't know about, like the time they decided to dress in drag and mingle with the training blue knights. Boy, I never heard the end of it from Miklotov. Sheesh.

The gates to Greenhill was visible as the entire grouped walked up a small up-sloping hill when Camus spotted a shining red object drifting into the city borders. Odd. It looked like one of his knights, but why was he heading to Greenhill?

"Leonard, did anyone come with you on your way to Two-River that happened to have lost his way?" ask the handsome Matildian commander.

        "No sir!" Leon exclaimed.

"Hmm..interesting..." Camus said as he rushed ahead of his group to get a closer look at the crimson colored object entering the gates of Greenhill. Indeed, it was a person dressed in the Matildian Red Knight's uniform but something looked different. The hair. The hair stuck up on end as if he had placed a finger in an electric socket.

He isn't one of us. Camus thought to himself. Unless someone recruited him and no one told me about it.

"Hey Leon, see that guy over there by the gates?"

        "Yes, sir Camus!"

        "Do you know him?"

"No sir! Never saw him in my entire life!"

"Must be the 'spy' you were talking about?"

Leon's eyes lit up and he merrily exclaimed, "Yes! That must be it! We must check this out!"

"What do you mean 'we'? I'm going to go investigate this myself. You stay here with Fido and Rover and make sure they don't get into trouble."

The two red knights turned towards the two kobold warriors. Feris was nearly in tears as Jordie was hitting him over the head with his spear. Camus groaned and shook his head. He wanted to lose the two kobolds as quickly as possible without endangering their lives. Ah well..that'll come later after I sort this mess at Greenhill.

"Leonard, take these two and give them a tour of Greenhill. Make sure the science majors at the academy don't take them in for laboratory testing or anything. I want them safe and sound so we can later drop them off back at Two-River when all this is over. Got that?"

Leon stood straight up and saluted the Red Knight commander, "Yes Sir! You can count on me sir! Come you overgrown furballs, let's go visit the pet shop..."

        ........Leonard, you moron.

Camus scanned the surrounding area for any signs of the mysterious 'red knight' that had entered the gates of Greenhill.

        Lost him.

        Damn.

        I'm back at square one....
