"A Father's Rage" (Lake near KusKus) It was a bright and sunny day. I'll bet you were expecting it to be dark and stormy night, weren't you? Well, day or night didn't really matter, because this story starts underwater. The murky depths were called home by many creatures, but he was not one who dwelled in these waters. He was an intruder, a transient, he was invading this water as he had many others in his relentless search. He shot through the water like a bullet, or perhaps a cannonball would be more accurate. So absorbed was he by his search that he didn't notice the eel that was swimming for him. Before he realized he was under attack, the huge eel had already entwined itself around him and was biting at several of his tentacles. The creature pushed out his powerful tentacles, pulling the eels body taught, until it gave up and tried to swim away. The creature watched it go, wondering why he had not been prepared for the sudden attack. *Maybe if I were a bit younger, I would have seen it coming...* he thought. Even to him it was a sorry excuse, and he knew why. It was not age that made him blind to the attack, but fatigue. He had been searching the continents waters for about a week, and he never slept for more than an hour at a time. Now though, the thought of sleep brought a heaviness to his eyes. *Stop it, damn you.* he thought to himself *your talking like a jellyfish. The more time you waste, the more danger he's in!* That certainly got him going. He had been searching the waters of this lake for almost two days, not finding hide nor hair of Chuchara, his beloved son. He decided it might be time to look for clues on land. As the kraken climbed up from the shore, he saw the bright sun blaring down at him, giving away his position to anyone who might look his way. "Ugh, looks like I'll have to wait until later. If one of those humans saw me up and about, who knows what would happen?" By this time he had climbed a considerable distance from the shore, and since he was too tired to go back, he merely settled in a bunch of tall bushes. He was well hidden and he could watch for any humans who might cross this way. Soon, however, his fatigue took over and he was drifting off into sleeps waters. He was underwater again, deep ocean water, not the kind he'd been in earlier today. In fact, he was much younger than he was this morning. A dark fear arose in his subconscious; he'd seen this before. There were two other krakens with him, one had deep blue skin and the other had a very light tan shade. The tan kraken had a spear in its side and its blood was clouding the waters along with its ink. "Go!" cried the injured sea dweller. "Take Abizboah get out of here!" The dark blue kraken, Abizboahs father, pushed him along through the water away from the ships on the surface. The young kraken cried out "Father, what's happening to Mother!? Why are we leaving her!?" The father wouldn't answer, he was concentrating solely on getting his son to safety. "Don't worry son" he said "she'll be just fine. You'll see." But Abizboah knew his father was lying through the gills. Seconds later, he heard his mother cry out in pain "AHHH!!!" Abizboah squirmed out of his fathers grip and swam directly at the sound, ignoring his fathers please to stop and come back. When he got to his mother, he never forgot what he saw. His mother, being dragged up in nets, was already being cut up. Humans did most of the butchery, with a little help from some kobold sailors. One or two wingers were there, bringing supplies back and forth from the main ship that was farther out to sea. They cut off her tentacles first, waving them around like trophies. Her head was skinned right there, and her organs taken out. She had used a lot of ink to hide her husband and sons escape, but the sailors fawned over the remaining ink like it was an elixir of life. Suddenly, one of the kobold sailors looked over and saw Abizboahs head poking out of the water, watching them in utter terror and shock. "Hey! There another one over there! ArfArf! Get it! We get twice as much money for two! AAWWOOOO!" As the sailors turned their attention to him, his father surfaced and shot some of his own ink at the horrible butchers. "I'm sorry Abizboah, we cant help your mother now. We must go" Abizboah stayed where he was, totally unmoving. "My son, we have to leave" Still, only watching the oncoming sailors. "WE MUST GO NOW!" the father cried, and somehow that snapped him out of his condition. As they swam away, his father was stuck with a spear near his heart. "FATHER!" he cried, as he tried to see how badly he was hurt. Abizboah saw the boats coming with amazing speed, and suddenly he could almost see his vision turning red. He yanked out the spear from his fathers hide, surfaced, and hurled it with all his might at the boats. "TAKE THAT, YOU MURDERERS!" he cried, but all they heard were some loud guttural noises. He watched with grim satisfaction as a kobold sailor's face seem to split in two as the spear hit. Only later did Abizboah realize that the kobold he hit was the one that pointed him out. The sight of the blood from his attack seemed to sate his anger, and he turned back to his father, who was barely holding onto consciousness. Holding onto his injured father, Abizboah raced with all his might to find somewhere safe. Swimming for what seemed like hours, he finally found a cave hidden deep under water. He pushed his father onto the stone floor and sat down next to him. "Abizboah..." his father said, his voice sounding strained with each sound. "I will die." Abizboahs eyes grew wide at the thought of his fathers dead. He pleaded "No! You can't die! Not after". "Be quiet, my son." his father said. Though his voice sounded so weak, they calmed the frantic kraken. "We gave our lives so you could keep yours,"he said "so please, promise me you'll cherish your life, and remember all those before you who died to protect their families" Abizboah was silent for a few moments before replying weakly "Yes...father....." He looked his father in the eyes, and they seemed to close with a look of happiness on them. Then they closed, and Abizboah knew they would never open again. He looked at his fathers prone body, and his eyes were close to tears as they came upon the spear buried in his side. His anger rose again as he looked at the spear, like it was a taunting demon. "That weapon." he thought "that human weapon..." With a howl of pure anger, he wrapped a tentacle around the spear and yanked it out. Leaving his fathers body in this hidden cave was the only burial he could manage, so he turned and dove back into the water. Armed with the weapon, he shot through the water in a mad rage, intent on finding the butchers and killing them as they had killed his parents. He searched the surface for hours, but they had left with his mothers body as their prize. In retrospect, perhaps it was better he didn't find them, as they almost surely would have killed him too. Abizboah awoke from the dream, his eyes still a bit hazy. He saw something moving in the distance. A horse drawn carriage *No! Its the sailors on their boat!* his mind said. He had not gotten enough sleep, even though it was already evening. His sleep deprived mind said *Now's your chance! Take your revenge!* Abizboah hung on this idea for a scant second, then decided to repay the humans. The bushes he was hiding in seemed to explode as he burst out, heading full-tilt at the carriage. Amy Belnar watched outside the window of the carriage, trying to ignore her parents boring talk of money. "Ah, I told you dear," her father said "I knew we would clean up when the war started." "Yes," said her mother "the Gate Rune war couldn't have come at a better time." Amy continued to stare out the window, trying to ignore her parents talk. "How boring." she thought "They drag me along on their business trips, ignore me the whole time, and call it ‘family bonding'.Her train of thought was promptly broken when a large and very pissed-off looking creature appeared from some bushes by the lake. Amy's eyes grew wide as the carriage continued its leisurely pace, as she seemed to be the only one who noticed. Before she could warn the others of the attack, the creature plowed head first into the carriage, sending its passengers and cargo flying. When Amy landed, she saw that the hulking creature, who seemed to resemble a squid, was turning to look at her. Abizboah looked around. The realization began to dawn on him that he wasn't attacking the sailors, but his rage stayed all the same. "WHERE IS CHUCHARA!?" he cried. "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH MY SON!?" The Blue Drops rune on his forehead glowed, but he wasn't intending to shoot any ink. He saw three humans running away, two of them carrying a large box. A fourth human hadn't even thought to get up, and was merely staring at the other humans and shouting at them. Amy watched in mortal terror as she saw her parents look from her, to the monster, and finally to the chest of gold that South Window had given them as payment for the weapons and supplies they provided. Her terror turned to despair as she saw her mother and father gather up the chest and the few potch that had fallen out, and ran as fast as they could for KusKus. "Mom! Dad! Don't leave me!"she cried, but to no avail. She looked back to the monster, who was screaming what only sounded like roars and grunt. Something on its head seemed to be shining, but that was not her biggest concern at the moment. A soft glow came from her left hand and she slowly realized it was the Flowing rune her parents had given her for her birthday. *but I wasn't planning on casting any spells...*she thought *I doubt any of them would help me here.* Suddenly, a loud voice rang through her head. "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH MY SON!?" it cried. She realized it was the monster, but how did it talk to her? It obviously didn't have a mouth, so... "ANSWER ME! WHERE IS HE!?" the creature demanded again. "I DON'T KNOW!" Amy cried. A bright beam shot out of her Flowing Rune and struck the Shining object on the creatures forehead. Visions exploded into her head; a tan squid with a spears in its hide, a kobold sailor being struck in the face with a flying spear, and a blue squid, dying from its own wounds. She heard a word said over and over, Abizboah, and she guessed that was the creatures name. She looked at the monster, and she saw it was frozen in its tracks, apparently getting visions from her mind as well. Abizboah stared at the human, dumbstruck. What had she done to his Blue Drops Rune that would make it act like this? He saw several visions of people and places, all seeming to revolve around this girl. He analysis was stopped as an arrow buried itself mere feet from him and the girl. He looked toward the town, and saw two of the humans who had run off had gathered reinforcements and were trying to shoot them. *Judging by those visions....they might be her parents...but they might shoot their daughter! Do they even care?* He turned back to the girl, his anger finally gone. "Hide!" he said "go before they shoot us both!" With that, he turned and ran for the water. Amy blinked in surprise. Did that thing just talk to her? She jumped behind a piece of the wrecked carriage and looked at the retreating kraken. "Hey!" she yelled to it "go to Coronet! It's north of here! I'll meet you there!" There wasn't a chance in hell that she was going to pass up the chance to study this creature. Besides, life was too boring around here anyhow. She saw the kraken turn to look at her as he ran, and she was pretty sure he had gotten the message. The hail of arrows stopped as he dived into the lake, there was no way they could get him now. Her parents came and she answered the usual questions like whether she was alright and if the thing hurt her. She managed to hide her disgust at the fact that they had been more worried about their money then her well being. That night, she looked from her window and out into the ocean, wondering where the mysterious creature was by then.
